To The Editors of the Journals Members of the
International Association of Labour Law Journals
Dear Colleagues,
In the year 2009 we had a very successful meeting in Sydney (August 30, 31), and saw the improvement of our website. News about the meeting itself, the participation in the exchange of journals and in the supply of information to the web site can be found in my minute of the Sydney meeting (http://onlinedb.lancasterhouse.com/images/up-Exchange___Website_usage.pdf). Since then, the situation has not significantly changed.
Exchange of journals. Also in 2009 I did not receive any information about the exchanges among other journals; of course, I will be pleased to be informed of exchanges going on. As regards Lavoro e diritto, it received regularly the following ones: Arbeit und Recht, Australian Journal of Labour Law, Bulletin de Droit Comparé du travail et de la Sécurité Sociale, Bulletin of Comparative Labour Relations, Canadian Labour and Employment Law Journal, Comparative Labour Law and Policy Journal, International Labour Review, Japan Labour Review, Relaciones laborales, Revista de Derecho Social. All these journals should have received regularly Lavoro e diritto (if not, please let me know and communicate the precise address at which you want to receive it).
The website. Ms Kathryn Kellner, of Lancaster House, Toronto (publisher of Canadian Labour and Employment Law Journal) acted as webmaster, and very effectively reshaped the website. On behalf of the whole Association I thank her for her commitment. I note here the plan for the website approved at the Sydney meeting:
Jeffrey Sack, of Lancaster House and associate editor of Canadian Labour and Employment Law Journal, … proposes to solicit all the Members to contribute to the different pages of the site and then to create a “common page” where all the news could be displayed in chronological order, in order to give to the reader an immediate coup d’oeil as to what is going on internationally in Labour Law; proposes also to insert in the Webpage a record of the number of visitors. It is suggested also to consider the possibility of creating direct links to the summaries in different journals (now it is possible in some cases to reach them through the webpage of the publisher or of the journal itself). The proposals are unanimously approved.
The Call for papers. In Sydney some changes in the formula of the Call have been decided. First of all it has been named in honour of the late Marco Biagi, one of the founders of the Association; three languages (English, French and Spanish) will be accepted. Still under evaluation is the possibility of attaching an honorarium and travel expenses for the presentation of the selected paper at the next 2010 meeting. The Call is going to appear in a few weeks in issue 4/2009 of Lavoro e diritto, has been published on line in Labour Web: Newsletter n. 22/2009 of 13/11/2009 (http://www.lex.unict.it/eurolabor/news/call-paper2010.pdf), and will be in the forthcoming issue of the Canadian Labour and Employment Law Journal, and of Revista de Derecho Social. I ask all the journals to publish it, if possible, and to inform me of the publication.
The 2010 meeting in United Kingdom. As decided in Sydney, the 2010 meeting will take place in the United Kingdom, at Herstmonceux Castle, hosted by Queen's University (Canada) and the Canadian Labour and Employment Law Journal. It will last from the evening of July 22 to midday on July 24. The theme will be the interface between corporate governance and labour law. The meeting will be integrated with the Queen's University course in Comparative Labour Law (http://law.queensu.ca/international/comparativeLabourLawCourse.html). Prof. Bernard Adell advises that there are still places open in the course, and anyone interested can contact him (bernard.adell@queensu.ca). A detailed programme of the meeting will follow.
I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year and, given that we are an International Association, a peaceful and more socially harmonious world.

Call for Papers
Selection
To stimulate scholarly activity and broaden academic interest in comparative labour and employment law, the International Association of Labour Law Journals announced in 2008 a Call for Papers which was published in a number of journals that are members of the Association.
A three-member academic jury evaluated the papers submitted and decided to select the following one:
Beyond the Contract: ‘Economic’ and ‘Bureaucratic’ Dependence in Personal Work Relations by Orsola Razzolini
The paper is scholarly and a very articulate essay about an important topic: the role of contract in regulating different “working relationships”. This issue is dealt with from the Relational Contracts and Transaction Cost Economics perspective and the study offers some very interesting insights and points of view in comparing different legal orders (Italy, Spain, France and Germany).
The author has been invited to present the paper at the Annual Meeting of the Association in Sydney, August 30-31, 2009.
Regarding publication, the author will be contacted directly by the interested journals.

In Memoriam - Professor Luis Aparicio Valdez (1930-2009)
Members of the Association will be saddened by the news of the passing away of Professor Luis Aparicio Valdez, a long-time supporter of the Association’s activities.
Professor Roger Blanpain, the distinguished international jurist, has written the following:
“I was very sad to hear that our good friend Luis has passed away. We worked together for almost 30 years, in the field of labour law as well as industrial relations. He was a brilliant intellectual, full of warmth and sympathy, and very hard-working. I remember very well the meeting in Tokyo where he was elected as President of the IIRA with the full support of members. The last time we met was in Bologna at the Marco Biagi Foundation, where we thanked him for his outstanding contribution, and for so eloquently representing the soul and character of the people of South America.
This is a sad day. We have lost a dear friend and an eminent scholar. We are lucky to have had such a friend. We will remember him forever.”
Professor Valdez, editor of the Peruvian labour law journal, Analisis Laboral, served, at various times in his distinguished career, as Vice-President of the International Society of Labour and Social Security Law, President of the International Industrial Relations Association, founding President of the Peruvian Association of Industrial Relations and of the Peruvian Society for Labour and Social Security Law.
In short, and quite remarkably, Professor Valdez served at the highest level in national and international associations in the fields of both labour law and industrial relations, thereby reflecting the great respect in which he was held by peers in the two sister communities. His academic service included professorships at the Pacific University and the National Trujillo University, again in the fields of both labour law and industrial relations.
During his lifetime, Professor Valdez received many honours and decorations, from governments in Peru and elsewhere.
I know I speak for members of the Association when I say that we all mourn Professor Valdez’s passing, and extend our condolences to his family.

President's Interim Report
The first trimester of 2009 has seen our Australian colleagues launch the organization of the 2009 Annual Meeting of the International Association of Labour Law Journals, which will be held in Sydney at the end of August (August 30-31), immediately prior to the 19th World Congress of the International Society for Labour and Social Security Law (September 1-4). Links to all the information you will need for the 2009 Annual Meeting are available on the home page of the IALLJ Website.
The work in progress on the development of our website is the other big news of the trimester. Thanks to Lancaster House, Kathryn Kellner is operating as webmaster, and is in the process of reconstructing the website pages (where you found this President’s Message). She has also begun contacting each Journal in order to update the information published and to arrange for reciprocal links between the IALLJ website and each Journal website. In a following Message I will let you know how many journals have positively responded to this initiative.
As regards the exchange of journals, I do not have anything to add to the information I shared in my Annual Report delivered in Warwick in 2008. Lavoro e Diritto has received regularly in the first three months of 2009 the following Journals:
Arbeit und Recht
Australian Journal of Labour Law
Bulletin de Droit Comparé du travail et de la Sécurité Sociale
Bulletin of Comparative Labour Relations
Canadian Labour and Employment Law Journal
Comparative Labor Law and Policy Journal
International Labour Review
Japan Labor Review
Relaciones laborales
Revista de Derecho Social
In return, we are sending out 2009 issues of Lavoro e Diritto (some of you will also have received the 2008 collection). All of these journals, and some others received in the past, are now kept in the Emeroteca of Il Mulino, a public journal library organised by the publisher, available for consultation. Click here to visit the website of la Biblioteca del Mulino.
To date, Sandrine Laviolette of Bulletin de Droit Comparé du travail et de la Sécurité Sociale has responded to my query about which Journals are being exchanged with other Journals. I would ask those of you who have not yet responded to contact me with this information at lavoroediritto@unife.it. In the alternative, if you did not receive my query, please contact me and I will re-send.
The Call for Papers decided upon in Warwick has been published in a number of journals (see my Annual Report), including also Bulletin de Droit Comparé du travail et de la Sécurité Sociale 2008, and Revista de Derecho Social No. 44. The deadline has just expired (March 31). Lavoro e diritto has received one paper. I would ask you to let me know if your Journal has received papers, in order to proceed to the evaluation phase.
As well, the organizers of the Annual Meeting in Australia (in August 2009) have called for papers about the “Labour and Social Aspects of the Global Economic Crisis”. Click here to view this Call for Papers for the 2009 Annual Meeting.
My kindest regards to all colleagues. Looking forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting in Sydney, Australia in August 2009, and perhaps also at the World Congress of the International Society for Labour and Social Security Law in September 2009.
